1st Priorslee and St Georges Scout Group started in 1979 with 2 Scout leaders, 10 Scouts and 20 Cub Scouts. Meetings were held at St. Peter’s Church, Snedshill. Later, the Scouts and Cubs moved to Holy Trinity Church Hall, Oakengates and Beavers moved to Priorslee Community Centre.
The Group set up a fund raising committee to begin to raise money to build their own headquarters. The land was given by Telford Development Corporation. After many years of fundraising we applied for and received two lottery grants and the building was opened in 2002. We have a large sports hall, committee room, kitchen, and storage facilities upstairs. The building is used by the local community.
The Scout Group is made up of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, along with Leaders and an Executive Committee. We will do activities or fundraising together as a whole group, and also the different sections will meet up. Family Camp for instance will be for all sections and their families.
The Executive Group are there to help raise funds, and to manage and maintain the Scout Hut. They do an excellent job and any parent wishing to be part of this committee should contact us.
Our district is Tern Valley and covers from Whitchurch down to the M54 and from Newport to Wem. Our District Commissioner (DC) is Colin Foot. He is supported by a large team of people. They are there to support all the groups, and will organise District Events, where all the Groups within Tern Valley meet.
The County team obviously covers the whole of Shropshire. They organise leader training. Also we have County Events such as the Fun Day, usually in September. County, along with Gilwell will also organise events to mark major anniversaries within Scouting – such as 100 years of Scouting. They will also support the District Teams.
Gilwell Park is in London and is the Scouting headquarters. They are the fount of all Scouting knowledge!
